What is the history of the Institute? Who are its founders?
The LawPartneringSM Institute is the outgrowth of numerous conversations, meetings
and activities that began at the annual convention of Commercial Law Affiliates in
San Antonio, TX, in March 1999. At that meeting, Peter Jenkins, now President of
LawPartnering, Inc., and Jim Shomper, Corporate Counsel and Manager of Law Firm
Partnering at DuPont Legal, first discussed the possibility of holding national
forums for corporate counsel on the subject of law firm/client partnering arrangements.
In October 1999, Peter Jenkins outlined the framework for an online resource to
supplement the national conferences that were being planned. The First Annual
Partnering & Convergence Forum for corporate counsel was held in Santa Monica, CA,
on December 9-10, 1999, through the collaborative efforts of DuPont Legal,
Commercial Law Affiliates, Legal Research Center, Jaffe Associates and West Group,
in cooperation with the American Corporate Counsel Association. The Second Annual
Partnering & Convergence Forum was held in Chicago, IL, on May 22-23, 2000; and the
first partnering conference for law firm leaders titled, "Partnering 2000," was held
in Washington, DC, on June 15-16, 2000.
The marked success of these programs emphasized the need for a reliable online
educational resource that attendees at the national conferences and others could
turn to for information and support relevant to lawpartneringSM initiatives. In
July 2000, Peter Jenkins revised his initial work and created the present design
of the LawPartneringSM Institute. The site was launched in December 2000.
